Anonymous Calling: Outgoing And Incoming

The number one question these days about private investigators and telephones is how to make calls anonymously without revealing your caller ID stuff and how to answer calls coming in when you are undercover or under pretext. Here are some answers.

Tip One:
Call the operator and tell her that every time you dialed a certain number, you are getting an “all circuits are busy” message. She’ll dial the number for you which then avoids caller ID. It’s important to note that some telephone service areas offer caller ID blocking techniques you can employ any time on your phone. To find out, just call your telephone service.

Tip Two:
On most phone systems, you can hit *67 which blocks your caller ID information that goes tough.

Tip Three:

Use the following guidelines as a plan of action

Get as much information about the nature of the accident and symptoms as possible.
Call for assistance. 9-1-1 or any non-emergency number depending on the seriousness of the emergency.
Keep the injured person comfortable. Do not move any injured person.
If the situation requires it, use first aid or CPR. Stay calm and appoint someone to assist.
Keep crowds away. Delegate someone to control the crowds if you are performing first aid or CPR.
Direct the ambulance or emergency medical staff to the scene of the emergency.
Assist ambulance crew or medical personnel as requested.
Be sure to report any medical emergency with as much detail as possible.

The following information is a general outline of the Emergency First Aid Course, CPR-B.
This content is not to be considered a replacement for proper in-class First Aid/CPR Training. This information is provided in order to facilitate a better understanding of what the Emergency First Aid/CPR-B Course is offering. Emergency First Aid and CPR Level B
Emergency First Aid:
The sum of knowledge and practical skills a First Responder requires in order to assist the victim of an accident or a patient suffering from an acute medical condition.

CPR Level B:
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Knowledge and skills a First Responder requires to identify and help victims of sudden cardiac arrest of any age, excluding infants. Infant CPR requires additional training (CPR Level C)
Legal Framework of Emergency First Aid and CPR (Canada and Ontario)
There are legal consequences of applying emergency first aid. As a security guard, you should be familiar with:

Roles and Responsibilities of First Responders
The Good Samaritan Act in Ontario
Duty to act (Ontario and other provinces)
Abandonment and Negligence
Victim/Patient Consent

The Chain of Survival: Early 911, Early CPR, Early Defibrillation, Early Advanced Life Support

Scene Safety
Making any situation safe means identifying safety hazards at the scene of the emergency (“fire, wire, gas, glass, people”). Next, you should ensure the safety of the First Responder, bystanders and victim.
You will have to identify methods of prevention of infectious diseases and barrier devices (wearing gloves, usage of CPR masks and shields, washing hands, etc). Some diseases are carried through bodily fluids (blood, vomit, saliva, etc). Others are airborne and blood-borne pathogens (Hepatitis, HIV, Tuberculosis).

Activating 911
Security guards must be able to identify situations requiring the 911 system to be activated. You need to know reporting procedures in placing a 911 call. You will have to be able to identify primary and secondary 911 agencies to respond (EMS, Fire or Police). Know the role(s) of the First Responder(s) in collaborating with emergency workers
The conscious and the unconscious victim/patient
First, you must determine the level of consciousness in a victim. Recognize the gravity of the situation based on mechanism of injury, nature of illness and level of consciousness. Then take appropriate first aid measures based on the above information (such as protecting an unconscious victim’s airway by placing the victim in the “recovery position”). Identify patients who have suffered mortal injuries and futility of performing first aid (decapitation, putrefaction, etc). Identify victims requiring CPR –unconscious, unresponsive and exhibiting no signs of life (such as no breathing). Carry out triage of multiple casualties as it relates to mechanism of injury, nature of illness, and the resulting level of consciousness.

CPR Level B includes patients ages 1-7 (children) and ages 8 and above (adults), defined as such for CPR skill techniques only. You will be able to define cardiopulmonary arrest (lack of breathing and circulation) and the causes leading to it. You must understand the importance of oxygen for the body and especially for the brain, brain damage and death resulting from lack of oxygen. You must understand the importance of restoring breathing and circulation in the victim of sudden cardiac arrest by performing CPR. At this level, you must understand how CPR artificially restores breathing (by performing mouth-to-mouth) and circulation (by performing chest compressions), effectiveness, statistics, troubleshooting. Practical skills: students will be performing CPR on a mannequin, ensuring proper airway, rescue breathing and chest compressions. You will be familiar with anatomical differences between adults and children, CPR technique differences.
Choking in conscious and unconscious victims
You should be able to identify leading causes of choking (airway obstructions) in adults and children (food, vomit, small objects). You should be able to identify victims of chocking based on demeanor (grabbing one’s throat, etc.) and quality of the victim’s airway (ability to speak, etc.). You should be able to identify complete airway obstruction vs. partial airway obstruction, evaluation, activating 911, consent, maneuvers to relieve the obstruction in conscious victims. You should be able to initiate CPR in unconscious, unresponsive and non breathing victims of choking. Special situations: chocking in children, obese, pregnant, extremely tall victims, and self-help in choking when no rescuer is available
First Aid Module
The first aid module teaches an understanding of First Aid scope of practice and its limitations. You will learn trauma vs. medical conditions. You will learn to recognize shock in the medical patient or trauma victim (shock as a result of blood loss or heart failure as an example). You will be able to describe medical supplies the first responder should be familiar using: splints, roller gauze, dressings, misc. bandages. You will learn how to improvise in case of lack or shortage of supplies.
Medical Conditions and First Aid
Learn to identify common medical conditions such as heart-related chest pain, diabetes, seizures, allergic reactions, asthma, based on signs and symptoms. Know how to render first aid in the above-mentioned conditions. Be familiar with comforting and/or reassuring the patient/victim while rendering aid.
Traumatic Injuries and First Aid
Learn to identify and treat internal and external bleeding in the trauma patient. Learn external bleeding, causes and treatment (direct pressure, pressure dressing, elevation, etc.). How to deal with head injuries, neck and spine precautions in the trauma patient. How do teal with bone and joint injuries (fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains). How to treat open fractures vs. closed fractures (bleeding, infection, etc.). Learn evaluating circulation in the affected limb. How to treat burns, types and treatment. Learn how to treat impaled objects, penetrating injuries (knives, bullet wounds, etc.) management. How to deal with evisceration and amputations, bleeding control and management. How to maintain airway maintenance in the unconscious trauma victim.
First Aid Special Considerations
Before you apply First Aid to anyone, you must consider the following:

The Emotionally Disturbed Patient
Drugs, alcohol and their effects on the human body
Comforting and reassuring victims in an emergency
Healthy Living; Disease and Injury Prevention
You should know principles of healthy living and how wellness impacts and prevents injury and disease. Consider factors such as:

Smoking, alcohol, drugs and their effect on health
Environmental factors and health
Role of the first responder in community
Physical exercise and its effects on health
Healthy nutrition
Mental stress, critical incident debriefings, counseling

It is important they approach individuals with respect to avoid any biases that may impact how they interrelate with others. Security guards need to avoid prejudices based on ethnic backgrounds, a person’s mental or physical disabilities, gender and sexual orientation.

Prejudice
Like anyone else, a security guard is a human being and will have his or her own natural likes and dislikes. Like any other human being, the officer will decide upon meeting people whether he or she likes or dislikes them. Unfortunately from a security public relations standpoint, these decisions are seldom based on fact but from prejudice. While these feelings are difficult to overcome, professional officers will discipline themselves to be fair and just in dealing with people regardless of personal prejudices.

Discrimination
Discrimination is an action or behaviour based on prejudiced attitudes. Discriminatory behaviour uses physical differences between people to justify unfavourable treatment towards people. Discrimination can target people who are perceived as part of a “different” group (e.g., women, people with disabilities, people from different racial or ethnic backgrounds, etc.) and has the effect of excluding or restricting their access to housing, employment, education, services, or participation in an organization. Discrimination can take the form of unfavourable treatment of one individual by another, or the exclusion or restriction of one group by another. It is important to remember that, to discriminate, one group must have social, economic and/or political power over another group.

Discrimination in employment refers to any act relating to recruitment, selection, promotion, training, firing, compensation, etc. that is not based on a person’s skill or ability to fulfill the legitimate requirements of a job. While individuals have the right to exercise tastes and preferences in their personal lives, everyone has a legislated responsibility to eliminate discriminatory behaviour and practices from their employment related activities.

Racism
Racism is the systematic mistreatment of a group of persons on the basis of their race, skin colour, ethnic origin, nationality, or religion.

Racial or Ethnic Harassment includes:

unwelcome remarks, jokes, innuendoes, or taunts about a person’s racial or ethnic background, colour, place of birth, citizenship, or ancestry
the display of racist, derogatory, or offensive pictures or material
refusal to converse or work with an employee because of that employee’s racial or ethnic background
using insulting gestures or playing practical jokes which, because they are based on racial or ethnic grounds, cause embarrassment or awkwardness
physical abuse.
Sexual Harassment
Includes:

Unnecessary touching or patting
Suggestive or other sexually aggressive remarks
Leering (suggestive staring) at a person’s body
Demands for sexual favours
Compromising invitations
Physical assault

Sexual Orientation
Sexual orientation is the right of an individual or individuals to relate sexually to persons of their choice. This term normally refers to homosexuality, bisexuality and heterosexuality
What is the definition of culture?
It’s the sum total of the ways of living built up by a group of human beings and transmitted from generation to another, the sum of attitudes, customs and beliefs that distinguishes one people from another. Culture is transmitted through language, material object, rituals, institutions and art, from one generation to the next.

How Do We Become Sensitive To Other Cultures?
Sensitivity covers the willingness to show an understanding of a particular ethnic group. We must be sensitive to a wide range of issues that they may feel are important, including:
